How to Use GemGrade: A Step-by-Step Guide to Pre-Grading Your Sports Cards

Whether you’re deciding what to buy, what to submit, or what to keep in your collection, GemGrade gives you a fast, convenient way to evaluate a card before professional grading.

All you need is a phone or computer, clear photographs of the card’s front and back, and a GemGrade account.

Step 1: Open GemGrade

Visit app.gemcardshow.com and sign in to your account.

New users may receive complimentary credits to try GemGrade. Additional scan credits can be purchased through Gem Card Show when needed.

Step 2: Choose Your Grading Mode

GemGrade offers two ways to evaluate your cards:

Scout Mode — Know What to Buy

Scout Mode is designed for quick evaluations when you’re considering a card at a show, card shop, or online marketplace.

It uses 1 credit and provides a fast assessment to help you identify promising cards and potential condition concerns.

Pro Mode — Know What You Have

Pro Mode provides a more detailed evaluation of a card you already own or are seriously considering for professional grading.

It uses 2 credits and analyzes:

• Corners

• Edges

• Surface

• Centering

• Eye appeal

• Primary grade limiter

• Likely professional grade range

• Scan quality and confidence

For the most complete evaluation, we recommend using Pro Mode.

Step 3: Prepare the Card

You can scan a card inside or outside a protective holder, but clearer images generally produce a more useful evaluation.

For the best results:

• Use bright, even lighting.

• Avoid direct glare and strong reflections.

• Place the card on a plain, contrasting background.

• Keep the entire card visible.

• Photograph the card directly from above.

• Make sure the image is sharp and in focus.

• Avoid fingers, shadows, or objects covering the card.

If possible, remove the card from a scratched or cloudy top loader. Always handle valuable cards carefully and never remove one from a holder if doing so could cause damage.

Step 4: Photograph the Front

Position the card so all four corners and every edge are visible.

Hold your camera parallel to the card. Taking the photograph from an angle may make the card appear off-center or distort its shape.

Before continuing, check the image for:

• Clear corners

• Visible borders

• Accurate color

• Minimal glare

• Sharp focus

Retake the photograph if important areas are blurry or covered by reflections.

Step 5: Photograph the Back

Flip the card over and repeat the same process.

The back is important because it may reveal corner wear, edge chipping, stains, print defects, or centering problems that are not visible from the front.

Make sure the front and back photographs show the same card.

Step 6: Submit the Card

Review both images, select your grading mode, and submit the card for evaluation.

GemGrade will analyze the visible characteristics of the card and prepare your results. Processing time may vary depending on image quality and system demand.

Step 7: Review Your GemGrade Results

Your results may include an overall grade estimate along with separate observations about the card’s corners, edges, surface, and centering.

Pay special attention to the Primary Grade Limiter. This identifies the area most likely to prevent the card from receiving a higher professional grade.

For example, a card may have strong corners and excellent eye appeal but still be limited by surface scratches or off-center printing.

GemGrade may also provide a likely grade range instead of one exact number. That range reflects the uncertainty involved in evaluating a card from photographs.

Understanding Scan Quality

A strong evaluation begins with strong images.

If GemGrade reports limited confidence or poor scan quality, do not immediately assume the card is in poor condition. Retake the photographs using better lighting, sharper focus, and less glare.

Small changes in photography can reveal defects—or show that an apparent defect was only a reflection.
